Prof. Ruth Nduati and Prof. Dalton Wamalwa, Faculty in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, School of Medicine, University of Nairobi have successfully competed for a National Institute Award.  Subject to continued availability of funds the grant will bring $641,518 US per year for 5 years for the period 2018-2022.

Kenya has one of the highest HIV burdens in sub-Saharan Africa with an estimated 1.6 million HIV-infected adults and children, an overall HIV prevalence of 6%, and more than 1 in 5 women living with HIV in western Kenya. To achieve and sustain epidemic control, this team proposes to train a multidisciplinary workforce to design, conduct and disseminate research that can be readily moved from the field into policy and practice to inform HIV prevention, care and treatment. The proposed program will accomplish this by building on the successes of two previous University of Nairobi (UoN) Fogarty and PEPFAR-funded programs, and leveraging 30 years of research and research training collaborations with University of Washington (UW), and strong ties between partnering academic Kenyan institutions, Ministry of Health (MOH) and the National AIDS and STI Control Programme (NASCOP).

Overall, our goal is to improve the health of all Kenyans by promoting research that reduces the burden of HIV and improves delivery of HIV services in Kenya. This will be achieved by strengthening implementation science and dissemination research training capacity for health professional students in medicine, nursing and pharmacy at 4 Kenyan universities (and through short courses and workshops promoting quality, evidence-based practices and inter-professionalism at affiliated teaching hospitals, most of which are located in rural, underserved areas, and the Kenya Ministry of Health.  The consortium brings geographically diverse institutions together from greater Nairobi, the county with the second highest burden of HIV in Kenya (University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology [JKUAT]), western Kenya, where the HIV epidemic is most severe (Maseno University), and the US (University of Washington and Stanford University) into a program that creates bridges across the disciplines of medicine, nursing, and pharmacy, and strengthens ties to MOH and government facilities.  We believe that uniting these diverse groups through inter-professional education and bridging academia and the Kenya Ministry of Health will build capacity and produce high impact research, quality clinical care and services, ultimately leading to better control of the HIV epidemic.

We propose three innovative educational programs that will increase the pipeline of HIV implementation science researchers in medicine, nursing and pharmacy and improve linkages between universities, MOH and affiliated community-based teaching facilities.

  • Enhance HIV implementation science and dissemination research capacity in Kenya through advanced, mentored research training to graduate students pursuing masters’ degrees in medicine, nursing or pharmacy at the 4 Kenyan partnering universities.
  • Increase the pipeline of young Kenyan researchers by developing and offering an innovative 6-8 week research elective that targets medicine, nursing and pharmacy students completing clinical undergraduate (bachelors) degrees at the 4 universities. 
  • Improve quality of care and evidence-based approaches at teaching hospitals by strengthening linkages between the 4 academic institutions, the Kenya MOH, and county health departments. 

The proposed program will not only be high impact but also sustainable since training will be well-integrated into current undergraduate and graduate curricula, and partnering universities and MOH have a strong commitment to training and capacity building at teaching hospitals.
