We held a 4-day ETAT+ (Emergency, Triage, Assessment and Treatment Plus admission care) Training at the University of Nairobi from 17th April to 20th April 2023. ETAT+ , is taught to all doctors in training, during their 11-week rotation in Paediatrics and Child Health.
ETAT+ is a training programme for disseminating the Ministry of Health Basic Paediatric Protocols and Comprehensive Newborn Care Protocols. These protocols provide guidance in managing the common serious diseases among the sick child aged < 5 years and small and sick newborns aged < 7 days respectively. At the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, we aim to train doctors in MOH evidence-based protocols in managing seriously sick newborns and children in preservice.
We trained 162 students, we observed them learn and evolve in skills and knowledge. The training was organized in plenary sessions and small group practical sessions. Thanks to department leadership for ensuring that our skill lab is equipped with all the equipment for training. At UoN, ETAT+ is in the curriculum and is an examinable subject! All trainers are trained in Generic Instructor Course (GIC) Trainer.
